When the former DMC world champion breaks for scratch solos, the crowd keeps dancing, something I've never seen before. (Pitbull's "Hotel Room Service" goes over huge.) A-Trak lets these tracks build to climax after climax, one every couple of minutes, and the crowd loses its collective shit every time. A-Trak's set consists almost entirely of hard, EQed-out electro-house with bits and pieces of Run-D.M.C., "Whoomp! (There It Is)", Kid Cudi, and "Jump Around" scratched in, plus the occasional dance-rap track. It's easy to clown A-Trak's novelty-chasing DJ style, but only when you're not watching people dumb out to it. Every time I walk past the stage today, people are going the fuck off, never harder than when A-Trak is at work. This means the stage is constantly packed, usually with people amped to dance enough that they braved the crowd crush. To get there, you have to walk down one of several specific walkways to a relatively tiny chunk of ground. Perry's Stage, Lolla's DJ spot, turns out to be the most brilliantly planned-out area at the entire festival.

We'll know as soon as the footage hits YouTube, which is probably happening as I type this. I can't say for certain, but it definitely looks like someone steals Glass' mic, and she retaliates by clocking the dude. During one of those trips out, some minor fracas goes down. When she stagedives, she doesn't so much surf the crowd as stand on top of it. (And there are still strobe lights! They don't do much, but you have to admire the dedication.) She whips her tiny frame across the stage with abandon, she teeters from the top of the drum kit like a gargoyle, and she stares down an entire crowd like she's ready to kill us all at the drop of a hat. But even without the darkness, Glass is still a ferocious figure. The kids cheer the opening blip-swarms of every track and even attempt to yelp along with Alice Glass' garbled screeches.Ĭrystal Castles' club show gets a lot of its power from the constant, disorienting strobe lights that hammer at you throughout. A massive throng turns up to see them, and the first 15 rows or so pogo hard all throughout their set. _Crystal Castles Ī couple of hours later, the rain is coming more steadily, but Crystal Castles don't have to work too hard to win over their crowd.
